Calibrating Your Monitor for Accurate Color

If your monitor isn't calibrated, every color decision you make is a guess.

Why Calibration Matters

Every monitor ships with a factory white point and gamma curve that drifts over time. A red dress that looks right on your screen can look muddy on the customer's phone if your monitor is off. Calibration measures your display with a hardware probe and builds a profile that corrects the drift.

For product photography that accuracy is the whole game. Returns caused by color mismatch are a real line item. Retouchable tags every export with the correct color profile and renders in a color-managed pipeline so your output stays consistent across devices, but it still helps if you calibrate the screen you're reviewing on.

How It Works with Retouchable

1

Buy a Colorimeter

Hardware calibrators from Calibrite, Datacolor, or X-Rite are the only way to get accurate results. Software-only calibration is a guess.

2

Run the Software

Set target white point (usually 6500K), gamma (2.2), and luminance (around 120 nits for web work).

3

Save the Profile

The software writes an ICC profile. Your OS applies it automatically after calibration.

5 Calibration Tips

Calibrate Monthly

Monitors drift. A monthly calibration keeps you accurate without becoming a chore.

Warm Up the Display

Give your monitor 30 minutes of uptime before calibrating. Cold displays measure inaccurately.

Dim Your Room

Ambient light affects your perception of screen color. Calibrate in the same lighting you'll work in.

Use 120 Nits for Web, 80 for Print

Overly bright screens make shadows look thin. 120 nits is the web sweet spot, print work goes lower.

Save the Profile Name With a Date

Name each profile with the calibration date so you can track drift over time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I calibrate without a colorimeter?

You can eyeball it, but the result isn't trustworthy. A cheap hardware probe is the only path to reliable color.

How often should I recalibrate?

Monthly for serious product work. Quarterly is acceptable for lighter use.

Does the OS need to know about the profile?

Yes. The calibration software installs an ICC profile that the OS picks up automatically.

Do laptop screens calibrate well?

Modern laptops with IPS or OLED panels calibrate well. Older TN panels shift color too much to trust for serious product work.

Ready for Predictable Color?

Calibrate your monitor and let Retouchable handle the output pipeline.
