Why cards break normal product photography rules
Most product photography advice tells you to soften your light and shoot from above. Both of those instructions actively hurt card photos.
A card's surface is a specular reflector. It does not scatter light the way fabric does — it bounces it at a predictable angle, straight back at your lens if the light sits anywhere near the axis between your camera and the card. Overhead light plus an overhead camera puts the light source's reflection directly in the frame. That is the white blob covering the player's face in half the listings on eBay.
Holographic and refractor cards make it worse. The foil layer is engineered to throw color in different directions as the card tilts, which is exactly the property collectors are paying for and exactly the property that turns into a rainbow smear in a static photo. You are not trying to eliminate the shine on a holo — you are trying to show it while keeping the artwork readable.
A phone or on-camera flash sits inches from the lens, which means its reflection lands dead center on any glossy card. There is no angle that saves you. Turn it off permanently for cards.
Graded slabs add a third problem. The acrylic case is thicker and slightly curved, so it produces both a surface reflection and a secondary internal one, plus glare bands along the edges of the label. Slabs need lights pushed higher and much wider than raw cards do.
The lighting setup that kills glare
The whole game is angle of incidence. Put your lights where their reflection bounces away from the lens instead of into it.
The reliable baseline: two matched daylight-balanced LED lamps (5500K) positioned at roughly 45 degrees to the left and right of the card, at about the card's own height or slightly above, with the camera directly overhead and level. Two lights rather than one, because a single source leaves an uneven falloff across a surface this small.

Black backgrounds for slabs are counterintuitive if you are used to white-background marketplace rules, but they work: a dark surround gives the acrylic less bright material to reflect, so the case reads as clear instead of milky. Check your marketplace's main-image policy first — some categories still require a white or neutral background on the lead image, in which case shoot the white version for the hero and dark-background detail shots for the gallery.
If you shoot near a window, work with indirect light on an overcast day or from a north-facing window, and turn off every overhead ceiling fixture in the room. Mixed color temperature between window light and warm bulbs will make white borders look yellow on one side and blue on the other, and no editing pass fixes that cleanly.
Two more cheap upgrades punch above their price. A circular polarizing filter — available as a clip-on for phones — rotates to cut reflections on glossy surfaces and is the single most effective tool against slab glare. And a small tripod or copy stand keeps the camera perfectly parallel to the card, which matters more than it sounds: shooting handheld at a slight tilt makes rectangular borders look trapezoidal, and buyers read uneven borders as a centering problem.
The shot list buyers actually want
Condition disputes come from missing photographs, not bad ones. A seller who posts one blurry front shot will field five messages asking about corners. A seller who posts the list below fields none.
For any card over a modest value
- Full front, straight-on, filling the frame. This is the hero. Card should occupy most of the image with a small consistent margin.
- Full back, same framing. Backs show wear, print lines, and staining that fronts hide.
- All four corners. One image with four cropped corner close-ups tiled together works better than four separate photos buyers have to click through.
- Edge view at a raking angle. Light skimming across the surface reveals surface scratches, print defects, and whitening that flat lighting flattens out.
- Angled holo shot for foil cards — one frame at a slight tilt that captures the shine pattern.
- Label close-up for graded cards, sharp enough to read the cert number.
That cert number matters more than sellers realize: buyers routinely look up the certification in the grading company's public database before bidding, and a legible label photo is what makes that possible. An unreadable label reads as a red flag on a market with real counterfeiting problems.
Photographing a soft corner clearly protects you. A documented defect that the buyer accepted at purchase is not a "not as described" claim. A defect they discover on arrival is.
For bulk lots, the calculus flips. Nobody needs corner shots of 400 commons. Shoot the lot fanned out so the volume is obvious, add one photo of a representative stack, and state the condition range in text.
Shooting a collection without losing a weekend
One card takes two minutes. Three hundred cards taken one at a time takes ten hours, which is why so many collections sit unlisted.
Speed comes from never touching the setup once it works. Lock your lights, lock the camera on a stand, mark the card's position on the background with two small tape corners, and then the per-card loop becomes: place, shoot front, flip, shoot back, remove. Two shots, no adjustments, roughly eight seconds each once you find a rhythm.
Note where the time actually sits. Shooting is not the bottleneck — post-processing is. Cropping every image to the same margin, straightening the ones that drifted a degree off, and evening out the exposure between the first cards and the last is the part that eats the evening.

Never retouch a card's condition. Removing a scratch, cleaning a stain, or sharpening a soft corner is misrepresentation and gets accounts suspended. Correct exposure, white balance, crop, and background — nothing that changes what the buyer is evaluating.
File specs and platform differences
Marketplaces compress uploads aggressively, so a file that looks fine on your desktop can land as a soft mess in the listing. Start with more data than you need.
Shoot at your camera's highest quality setting — RAW if you have it, maximum-quality JPEG otherwise — and only downsize at the very end. Do not export at 80% quality and then let the marketplace compress it again; two rounds of lossy compression is where the mushy artifacts around card text come from.
The platforms also want different things. eBay rewards zoom-capable images and prohibits borders and promotional watermarks on listing photos. TCGplayer leans on catalog imagery for most singles, so your photos matter most for condition-sensitive and high-value listings. Whatnot and other live-selling platforms are video-first and vertical, meaning your static shots serve mainly as the thumbnail and the post-sale record. Instagram and card-community feeds reward the angled holo shot that looks worst as a listing hero — shoot both.
