Why refurbished photography follows opposite rules
New-product photography optimizes for aspiration. Refurbished photography optimizes for accuracy under scrutiny. A buyer paying 40% below retail for a Grade B phone is not asking "is this beautiful?" — they are asking "what exactly am I getting, and is the discount worth it?"

The commercial logic is counterintuitive but consistent: showing a scuff in the listing costs you a small number of clicks and saves you a much more expensive return, a negative review, and — on Amazon — a condition-mismatch complaint that damages account health. Returns on refurbished electronics are disproportionately driven by "not as described" rather than "doesn't work," which is a photography problem, not a refurb-quality problem.
Amazon Renewed requires images of electronics with the screen turned on, and will not accept digitally altered images as approval evidence. Before you build any editing workflow, read the current program terms for every marketplace you sell on — grading definitions and image counts differ between them.
Shoot the grade, not the device
The core discipline is that your image set is documenting a cosmetic grade, not a model number. Two Grade B laptops of the same SKU can look meaningfully different, so your photos need to represent the worst-case unit a buyer might receive in that grade — not the nicest one on the bench.

A workable baseline set for any refurbished electronic device is nine to twelve frames: front, back, both sides, top and bottom edges, screen powered on displaying a neutral test image, ports and connectors, included accessories laid out, and the packaging the unit ships in. Anything below eight frames leaves the buyer filling gaps with pessimism.
Shoot the powered-on screen frame with a mid-grey or solid neutral background image rather than a colorful wallpaper. Grey reveals dead pixels, backlight bleed, and uniformity issues — which protects you when a buyer inspects the display and finds nothing you did not already disclose.
How to light scratches so they read honestly
Blemishes on glass and anodized aluminum are almost invisible under the soft, wrapped lighting that flatters new products. That is precisely why standard product lighting is the wrong tool here — it accidentally under-discloses.
Use two setups per unit:
- Disclosure lighting: a hard, raking light at roughly 15–25 degrees off the surface plane. Grazing light catches scratch edges and casts micro-shadows, making wear legible. Use this for your blemish close-ups.

Screens need their own treatment. Shoot displays slightly off-axis with a polarizing filter to control reflections of your own lighting, then take a second, un-polarized frame so buyers can see how the panel actually behaves with a room reflected in it. Overly polarized screen shots look cleaner than reality and invite disputes.
Always include a scale reference in blemish close-ups — a coin, a ruler edge, or a consistent macro framing you use across every listing. "A scratch" means nothing; "a 4mm hairline on the bottom bezel" means everything.
Where AI editing is legitimate — and where it is not
The refurbished category has a bright line: you may never alter the condition of the device. Removing a scratch, evening out a scuffed corner, replacing a worn housing, or generating a screen that the unit does not actually display are all misrepresentation, and on Amazon Renewed digitally altered images are explicitly invalid as approval evidence.
What is still fair game is everything that has nothing to do with condition:

Photograph the packaging and accessories separately and honestly. A large share of refurbished disputes are not about the device at all — they are about a missing charger, a generic cable, or a plain brown box the buyer did not expect. A pre-publish checklist
Before a refurbished listing goes live, run every image set against this:

- Do blemish close-ups include a scale reference?

- Does the grade language in your copy match what the photos show — no "like new" over a photo with visible scuffing?
- Are white balance and background consistent across every frame in the set?
